Traditional social values of Indian society includes tolerance, spirituality, diversity, compassion, collectivism and love.These are part of Indian traditions since ancient times and are today integral part of our customs and practices.
How does Indian society maintain continuity in traditional social values?
Family: is still the basic unit of the society. This was also true in the veic age where it was names as ‘KULA’.
Marriage: Marriage especially arranged marriage is practices even today. This institution is mostly patrilocal and is a continued social practice. However recent issues on same-sex marriages is been debated and is a test of Indian social dynamicity in accepting this concept into marriage as an institution.
Rituals and Worshiping: We keep fast on certain occasions and also regularly go to temples for worship even today which is a continuation of our traditional social value. However, youth today are more influenced by the forces of westernisation and this has impacted their outlook towards worship and temple going.
Social gatherings: Our culture believes in the values of collectivism and hence we see more social gatherings in the name of festivals, celebrations and functions. This is continued even today.
Reasons for continuity:
Assimilative capacity of our Society: We constantly adopt to better practices that are shared around us.
Modernisation: We constantly self-introspect and remove regressive values from the society and add progressive values into our social traditions
Diversity: We respect divergent views, opinions, thoughts and practices. This makes our social attitude to be highly tolerant and hence is foundation for the continuity of all other social values.
Conclusion
The traditional Indian values like ‘Vasudev Kutmbakam’, ‘Attithi Devo Bhava’, ‘Yoga’ or ‘Ayurveda’ continue to assert their significance and are started to be accepted at the world level as well.
