The Regulating Act of 1773 and Pitt’s India Act of 1784 were introduced.
Judicial Reforms:.
Two High Courts, the one Sadar Diwani Adalat (for civil cases)and the other Sadar Faujdari Adalat (for criminal cases), were established at Calcutta. The criminal court was to have an Indian judge.
The appeals of the district courts were sent to Sadar Adalats for final judgments.
The civil cases were decided on the basis of community laws, e., in case of the Hindus, Hindu law and in case of the Muslims, Muslim law was applied. The criminal cases were decided according to Muslim law.
The judges were paid fixed salaries and they were prohibited from taking presents so that they might remain just.
Abolition of the Dual System: The East India Company decided to act as Diwan and to undertake the collection of revenue by its own agents. Hence, the Dual System introduced by Robert Clive was abolished.
To improve the finances of the Company Hastings reduced the allowance of Nawab to half and also stopped the annual payment to the Mughal Emperor.
Concerning trade, Hastings abolished the use of “Dastaks” free passes.
